History of Autrique house
The Maison Autrique (Horta 1893) is an important milestone of Art Nouveau. It has undergone an exemplary restoration. Now open to the public, it allows everyone to better understand the historical and aesthetic interest of Brussels' old houses. During your visit, you will discover exhibition spaces, a small thematic bookshop and an original scenography by Benoît Peeters and François Schuiten.

The collections
The collections of the Maison Autrique are built around the way of life at the turn of the 20th century in Brussels. In the setting of a house built – but not furnished – by Victor Horta, we find the furniture, lights, works and objects of art of the age. The drawings of François Schuiten, several of which adorn the walls, showcase the main architectural and ornamental elements.
The main subject of the permanent exhibition is the house itself. The building is used to present the work of Victor Horta at the beginning of his career, of various restorers[1] (thanks to whom the house regained its former glory), and Schuiten and Peeters as scenographer and storytellers.
When the house was restored to its original state, a partnership was created with the cultural department of the Municipality of Schaerbeek, which accepted to put a certain number of art works and objects belonging to it in safe custody. So art objects and other furnishing elements from the 19th century were used to decorate the Maison Autrique.
Schuiten Collection
The Maison Autrique received a donation of original drawings by François Schuiten. All the drawings made over nearly twenty years that pertain to the house thus constitute the first works of art that belong specifically to the non-profit association Maison Autrique asbl. Several of these drawings have been exhibited at various parts of the house since it opened and are changed to chime with temporary exhibitions.
To ensure the survival of the collection of François Schuiten’s drawings, the non-profit association has framed those which had not been framed yet. A second step will consist of creating a storage facility that meets the hygrometric standards for paper conservation.
Goovaerts Collection
In 2015, the Maison Autrique received four chairs and two vases from the private residence of Augustin Goovaerts, an architect and contemporary of Horta, born in Schaerbeek, who worked in Colombia in the interbellum. Our collection is naturally geared to our desire to become the “house of houses”.
The arrival of the Goovaerts Collection has turned us into a forum of engagement with the stories of the various architects at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century: their travels, respective influences, way of designing the private residence in a booming city, furniture design, etc. The Maison Autrique wishes to develop its scholarly research into these architects who devoted their life and work to improving daily life in Brussels houses.
