Maison Autrique - Duo Stéphane Mercier & Maxime Blésin -

Duo Stéphane Mercier & Maxime Blésin

This is not the duo's first attempt. Maxime and Stéphane have been playing together since the early 90s.

They've scoured the jazz clubs and travelled extensively: Brussels, Paris, Boston and New York are just some of the cities they've discovered together. The pleasure of playing as a duo is always palpable.

The warm sound of the alto sax and strings allows them to take a velvety approach to the melodies found in jazz gems such as Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter, as well as some of their own compositions.

Stéphane Mercier ( sax, flute)

Born into a family steeped in music and musicians, Stéphane Mercier studied various instruments from an early age before devoting himself to the saxophone and flute, composing and arranging.

After studying at Berklee College of Music in the mid-90s, he toured with Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, B.Connection, Exile Society and others, before moving to Brooklyn, where he played and/or recorded with Aaron Goldberg, Chris Cheek, Avishai Cohen, Randy Brecker, Jeff Ballard, Ingrid Jensen, Matt Penman and others.

Stéphane currently lives in Brussels, where he leads his own quartet (with Nicola Andrioli, Nicolas Thys and Dré Pallemaerts), the Jazz Station Big Band, BKonexion, the Damon Brown & Stéphane Mercier Quintet, Quantum Stereo and plays/composes for Brooklyn band BZ Sounds, among others.

His discography can be found on several labels: Birdland Sessions, Fresh Sound/New Talent, Mogno Music, Igloo, Quetzal and Hypnote Records.

Maxime Blesin (guitar)

Maxime started playing guitar at the age of 14. He was soon playing with local rock bands and taking music lessons.

At 18, after graduating from secondary school, he left Belgium for Brazil and discovered the local music scene. He studied at the Escola Ian Guest de aperfeicoamento musical in Rio de Janeiro with teachers such as Nelson Faria (The Brazilian guitar book, Sheer music).

Back in Belgium, he studied jazz for two years in Antwerp with Pierre Vandormeal, Hans Van Oost and Karl Van Deun. He then moved to New York and Boston, where he studied with guitar mentor Jon Damian. He is a self-taught singer. At the same time, he works as a sound engineer: he has recorded over 40 albums and produced 5 albums.
